PROFESSIONAL REGULATORY BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS RESOLUTION NO. 001-17

ALLOWING ONLY REGISTERED AND LICENSED PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS TO USE AND APPEND TO THEIR NAMES THE PROFESSIONAL TITLE "LPT"

WHEREAS, the passage into law of Republic Act No. 7836, otherwise known as the Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994, as amended, paved the way for the professionalization of the practice of teaching in the country;

WHEREAS, said law empowers the Professional Regulatory Board for Professional Teachers (Board) to promulgate, administer and enforce rules and regulations necessary for carrying out the provisions of R.A. No. 7836, as amended; supervise and regulate the registration, licensure and practice of professional teachers in the Philippines; and look into the conditions affecting the practice of the teaching profession and whenever necessary, adopt such measures as may be deemed proper for the enhancement and maintenance of high professional and ethical standards of the profession, among others;

WHEREAS, it is punishable for any person to practice the teaching profession in the Philippines without having been registered and licensed to engage as such; or to, in connection with his/her name, otherwise assume, use or advertise any title or description tending to convey or which conveys the impression that he/she is a teacher without holding a valid certificate for such purpose;

WHEREAS, one of the identifiable means to recognize a professional is through the professional titles appended to their names, such as, for instance, the use of MD for Medical Doctors, RN for Registered Nurses, Engr. for Engineers, RPT for Registered Physical Therapists, to name a few;

WHEREAS, the use and appending of such professional title to one's name gives or tends to give an impression that the bearer thereof is a bona fide registered and licensed professional;

WHEREFORE, the Board, upon these considerations, hereby RESOLVES to allow only registered and licensed professional teachers to use and append to their names the professional title "LPT".

FURTHER RESOLVED, that those who so use and append to their names such title when they are not, in fact, professional teachers duly registered and licensed by the Board and the Commission shall be meted with the corresponding sanctions as prescribed in the General Penalty Clause of R.A. No. 7836, as amended.

This Resolution shall take effect after fifteen (15) days following its full and complete publication in the Official Gazette or any newspaper of national circulation.

Let copies hereof be further furnished the U.P. Law Center and such other professional teachers organizations/associations for information.
